Brief History Paragraph-

In 1492 Columbus explored and claimed the island, that was further named Hispaniola. In the 17th century the Spanish maintained control, the French had even formed a collony on the island. The island started out as Santo Domingo, it was eventualy overpowered by Haitians for about 22 years until independence as the Dominican Republic in 1844. The Dominican Republic shares the island with Hispaniola. The eastern 2/3 of the island belongs to the Dominican Republic and the western 1/3 of the island belongs to Haiti.
